Newcastle in communication with Liverpool over Keegan tribute

Newcastle United is in communication with Liverpool to ensure Kevin Keegan's memory is marked fittingly before their Premier League opener on August 23.

Keegan died on Monday aged 75 after a stage-four cancer diagnosis announced in January. Tributes have poured in since his passing.

Newcastle confirmed plans to honour Keegan throughout pre-season. The first team, Under-21s and women's team will wear black armbands for all pre-season fixtures. A minute's silence will be held before Saturday's friendly with Gateshead.

Keegan's image will appear on the big screen in the seventh minute at several matches including Bristol City, Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg. Regarding the Liverpool game, Newcastle said the club is working with supporter groups and the Premier League to shape tributes.

Keegan joined Newcastle in 1982 and later managed the club. He also starred at Liverpool, winning three league titles and the European Cup.
