Nick Kyrgios has praised João Fonseca ahead of their scheduled clash at the Ultimate Tennis Showdown in Rio de Janeiro. The Australian believes the 19-year-old Brazilian has what it takes to win multiple Grand Slams.
Kyrgios is set to face Fonseca on July 17 in the exhibition event. This marks their first meeting, with the Brazilian ranked No. 27.
In comments to Tennis Majors, Kyrgios said, “Fonseca has the potential to win multiple Grand Slams. I look at his level, what he’s been able to produce, how quick his transition has been – he’s definitely got that x-factor, the work ethic, the level. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re seeing him be a multiple Grand Slam champion.”
The match follows a unique format of four eight-minute quarters. Kyrgios enters after a July 16 loss to 17-year-old Luis Guto Miguel in five quarters.
Kyrgios acknowledged the home crowd support for Fonseca, drawing on past experiences in hostile atmospheres including matches against Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
