Far Cry TV series advances: Noah Hawley scripting, to direct first episodes

Six months after FX's series order, Noah Hawley provided an update on the Far Cry TV adaptation, confirming it's in early development as an anthology with original stories per season. Hawley is writing scripts, plans to direct the first two episodes, and production will share facilities with Alien: Earth Season 2.

Following FX's November 2025 greenlight for the Far Cry anthology series executive produced by Noah Hawley and Rob McElhenney, the project is advancing steadily. In a Deadline interview, Hawley revealed he has finalized the story and is now preparing scripts. He intends to direct the pilot two episodes, prioritizing it alongside his work on Alien: Earth Season 2, with shooting potentially starting soon after that series wraps. Production will utilize Pinewood Studios in London and a shared secondary site for efficiency.

Hawley explained his approach draws from the franchise's anthology structure: "One thing that really attracted me to the Far Cry franchise is that it is an anthology and every time they release a new game it is a totally different story... That's how I approach Fargo, and it was an exciting idea that we could build an anthology game adaptation where each season is a different story about civilized people thrown into situations where they have to become increasingly uncivilized."

He emphasized creative engagement: "Let me have a dialog with this franchise, because this is what I think a Far Cry story is." Hawley also noted challenges in adapting video games for drama.

Far Cry 4 creative director Alex Hutchinson criticized Hawley's comments on LinkedIn, stating they were 'pissing him off.'
