ODM to stay in government until 2027

ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna has confirmed the party will remain in the coalition government until 2027, in line with Raila Odinga's wishes. This was announced at the party's first meeting since Raila's death on October 16. The party also endorsed Oburu Oginga as new leader and planned memorial services.

At yesterday's meeting, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna read a statement from the party's National Executive Committee, stating that ODM will continue its partnership with UDA until 2027. "We reaffirm the party's intention to remain in the coalition government until 2027, a relationship guided by the 10-point agenda in the handshake agreement to ensure peace in the country," Sifuna said.

Sifuna, who has been a sharp critic of this partnership, acknowledged it as Raila Odinga's wish. He has opposed the government several times for failing to implement the agreement signed after last year's Gen Z protests. MPs Caleb Amisi of Saboti and Babu Owino of Embakasi East have also criticized the alliance.

This meeting was the first since Raila Odinga's death on October 16, and it was used to endorse Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga as the party leader. Sifuna said ODM will remain strong even after Raila's death, and dissenting views are normal in democracy.

ODM announced memorial services for Raila: in Magarini constituency, Kilifi, on October 2-3, ahead of the by-election on November 27 where ODM candidate Harrison Kombe is backed by UDA. Other services in Migori and Homa Bay on November 5 and 6. Additionally, the party's 20th anniversary celebrations will proceed in Mombasa on November 14-16 to ensure unity. The party will continue Raila's dream and send condolences to his family.
