ODM's move to bar UDA from fielding candidates in its political strongholds for 2027 has sparked a new rift within the coalition government. The party has signaled support for President William Ruto but warned against incursions into Nyanza, Western, and Coast regions. This division threatens ODM's popularity and has raised concerns among its members.
This ODM initiative stems from its aim to retain a large number of MPs to wield significant influence after the 2027 elections, particularly in any alliance with President Ruto. The party's popularity in Gusii and Western regions is now challenged by other parties like UPA and DAP-Kenya. Some ODM members are showing signs of defecting due to fears of being sidelined.
ODM Chairperson and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga issued the warning while speaking in Awasi, Nyando constituency, on Friday. “We are in the coalition government as ODM, and among our agreements is that there should be no encroachment on our strongholds,” Wanga said. This statement has angered ODM leaders who fear exclusion in nominations and UDA figures from Nyanza, where ODM has long dominated politically.
Former Nairobi Governor and UDA member Evans Kidero rejected the warning. “Assigning regions to parties and then barring others from fielding candidates is a violation of democracy. We will not accept it,” Kidero stated. UDA's Homa Bay County Chairperson Kennedy Obuya confirmed that his party will field candidates in Kisumu, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori to let voters choose their leaders. “UDA will have candidates... Our people will have the duty to choose leaders and know that there is no coalition without UDA,” Obuya said.
In the recent Kasipul by-election, ODM faced criticism for primaries that favored Boyd Were, son of the late MP Ong’ondo Were. ODM Deputy Leader Godfrey Osotsi reassured supporters that the party will remain strong. “Many think ODM will collapse without Raila. They will be surprised, but we must talk to our partners,” Osotsi said. MP Mark Nyamita stressed the need for fair nominations, as he eyes the Migori governorship. However, MP Caroli Omondi has announced he will not seek re-election through ODM due to interference.
