Ogun ADC demands release of Sowore, Kanu's brother and others

The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress has called for the immediate release of human rights activist Omoyele Sowore, Nnamdi Kanu's brother Prince Emmanuel Kanu, and others arrested during a protest in Abuja. The party accused police of abusing power and violating constitutional rights. It urged an investigation into the officers involved.

On October 26, 2025, the Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) condemned the arrest of several individuals during the #FreeNnamdiKanu protest in Abuja. The party specifically demanded the unconditional release of activist Omoyele Sowore, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor—special counsel to Indigenous People of Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu—and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, along with other demonstrators.

Sowore, who had been granted bail alongside 13 others, was reportedly re-arrested outside the Kuje Magistrate Court and forcibly taken away in a vehicle. ADC Chairman Otunba Femi Soluade described the incident as a blatant violation of citizens' rights, emphasizing that peaceful protests are a constitutional guarantee under Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution, as upheld in cases like All Nigeria Peoples Party v. Inspector-General of Police.

"The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ogun State views with profound dismay and condemnation the recent arrest and detention of activist Omoyele Sowore, Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, and Prince Emmanuel Kanu, alongside other peaceful demonstrators in Abuja," Soluade stated. He added, "The right to peaceful assembly and protest is the heartbeat of any democracy."

Soluade accused the police of abuse of power and double standards, noting that officers protect anti-Kanu demonstrations while suppressing pro-Kanu ones. He called on Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun to investigate the arrests and hold culpable officers accountable, arguing that such actions erode public trust and undermine democracy.

The party insisted that Nigeria's unity depends on respecting dissent rather than suppressing it through intimidation. Soluade urged an end to the harassment of peaceful protesters, stressing the need for neutral law enforcement.
