A police car crashed into poles in central Malmö late on Thursday evening during an emergency response. Two officers were taken to hospital with minor injuries. The incident occurred as they were assisting other patrols in a case involving an e-scooter rider.
Late on Thursday evening, around 10 p.m., a police car crashed into poles at a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Lantmannagatan and Lönngatan in central Malmö. The police vehicle was traveling at high speed onto a central reservation and collided with a traffic light pole and another pole, according to witness accounts and police reports.
The patrol was en route to assist other officers in pursuing an e-scooter rider suspected of reckless driving. According to TV4 and Expressen sources, the police car was chasing the e-scooter, but Mikael Lind, duty officer for the police in southern region, emphasizes that the crash occurred while providing assistance in another case. 'They were to assist patrols in another matter,' he says.
A witness described it as sheer luck that no pedestrians were at the crossing at the time. 'It was sheer luck that no one was crossing the pedestrian crossing when it happened,' the person told Expressen.
The two officers in the vehicle were taken to hospital for checks. 'There are no serious injuries. It might be some pain and bruises but nothing more serious than that,' Mikael Lind states. The e-scooter rider was detained in connection with the incident.
By 11 p.m., a large police presence was at the scene, and the damaged police car was being towed away. Police are investigating the crash as a traffic incident during an emergency response.
