PSG dominated early, but a 9th-minute goal by Fabian Ruiz was disallowed by VAR. They broke through in the 38th minute: Desire Doue's cross was parried by Agustin Rossi to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia for a tap-in, leading 1-0 at halftime.
Flamengo equalized in the 61st minute via Jorginho's penalty after Marquinhos fouled Giorgian de Arrascaeta. Substitutions included Ousmane Dembele and Bradley Barcola for PSG, and Pedro for Flamengo. No further goals came in normal or extra time.
In the shootout, Safonov saved four Flamengo penalties, while Rossi denied Barcola. PSG's Vitinha and Nuno Mendes scored theirs; despite Dembele's miss, PSG prevailed 2-1 overall in the shootout.
Luis Enrique backed starting Safonov over injured Lucas Chevalier: "It’s a time to be united and enjoy winning another trophy." Warren Zaire-Emery said: "We played a great match against a tough opponent."
