ESPN reports rampant league-wide talk of James signing with his hometown team in the 2026-27 season. James remains noncommittal about his future, stating he has no idea what he will do next.
During NBA All-Star Weekend in February 2026, rumors surfaced that LeBron James, who will become a free agent this offseason, could return to the Cleveland Cavaliers. ESPN noted "rampant speculation" suggesting James would join Cleveland for the 2026-27 season. The Athletic appeared on Cleveland radio and stated that if James plays next season, "it's gonna be here."
The buzz reached Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell, who was asked about the possibility on SiriusXM NBA Radio. Mitchell, who attended James' 2010 Decision announcement as a child, said playing with James would be "special" but declined to speculate further.
James, now 41 and in his final contract year with the Los Angeles Lakers, addressed questions about retirement or his next move at the weekend event. "When I know, you guys will know," he said. "I don't know. I have no idea." He added, "I just want to live, that’s all."
The Lakers plan to create about $50 million in cap space this offseason, potentially to rebuild around other players, as James appears outside their long-term plans. Despite his age, James averaged 22 points and seven assists this season, shooting over 50% from the field, and participated in his 22nd All-Star Game.

While scenarios exist for Cleveland to sign James, such as via mid-level exceptions or sign-and-trade involving players like Jarrett Allen, these remain hypothetical. James has a history of moves preceded by similar speculation, including his 2010 Heat joining and 2014 Cleveland return. No firm decisions have been made, and both teams face playoffs ahead.
