Before halftime, Nemanja Gudelj headed in a corner from Vargas to make it 2-1, a vital goal that helped the hosts withstand Atlético's pressure in the second half. Sevilla coach Luis García Plaza started six youth players, while Diego Simeone, sidelined by suspension, focused on upcoming Champions League quarterfinals and the Copa del Rey final.
"We are left with a short result for us. We could have equalized," Simeone said. García Plaza admitted: "We went ahead and then the team dropped back. I didn't like it, but in the second half we were perfect".
The win ends Sevilla's poor run and provides breathing room in their fight for LaLiga EA Sports survival.
