San Jose Sharks rookies Sam Dickinson and Michael Misa opened up about their inaugural trip to New York City during the team's recent road trip. The 19-year-old Dickinson and 18-year-old Misa discussed Broadway shows, tourist mishaps, and their excitement for the city. They visited NHL headquarters in Manhattan to chat with NHL.com.
During the San Jose Sharks' road trip last week, rookies Sam Dickinson and Michael Misa ventured into New York City for the first time, embracing the bustling metropolis with a mix of enthusiasm and novice mishaps. The pair attended a performance of the Tony Award-winning musical 'The Book of Mormon' on Broadway, which has been running since 2011.
After the show, they opted for a pedicab ride, a common tourist transport in the city. 'We were at ‘Book of Mormon,’ which is pretty funny,' Dickinson told NHL.com. 'And then we went on an adventure after that on one of the bike carts (pedicabs). Kind of got ripped off. Not ideal. I didn’t know that was a thing, but, you know, it's been good. I mean, first time here, so it's pretty cool to see New York and everything about it.'
Misa highlighted other sights they explored. 'We saw the Empire State Building,' Misa said. 'And then, I think we're going to try and see the Statue of Liberty pretty soon and then buzz through Times Square.' On Wednesday, the rookies stopped by NHL headquarters in Manhattan for a Q&A session.
The conversation touched on the World Series, where they watched Game 7 from their hotel and cheered loudly for George Springer's home run. Misa expressed interest in attending a game, while Dickinson predicted a sweep and Misa foresaw a 4-2 Jays victory.
They also shared childhood hockey idols: Dickinson named Sidney Crosby, whom they recently faced on the ice, and Misa cited Mitch Marner, whom he followed from London, Ontario, to the Maple Leafs. A lighthearted quiz on New York boroughs—Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and the Bronx—led to some playful banter, with Misa guessing Long Island initially.
Other topics included favorite Netflix shows like 'Prison Break' for Misa, superpower preferences (flight for Dickinson, teleportation for Misa), and the mobile game Clash Royale. On adjusting to pro life, Misa emphasized recovery: 'Just getting your body in the best shape and maintaining it after games and days off.' Dickinson added the importance of learning from teammates: 'How they take care of their bodies and make sure you’re ready for practices, eating right and sleeping right.'
