Sheinbaum and Monreal reject taxing inheritances in Mexico

President Claudia Sheinbaum and Morena coordinator Ricardo Monreal rejected Minister Lenia Batres' proposal to tax inheritances and legacies this Thursday.

During the morning press conference on July 9, Sheinbaum stated it is not a proposal they would make and that she would not open that legislative debate. “We do not believe in taxing inheritances,” she said.

Monreal, in a conference at the Chamber of Deputies the same day, noted there is no initiative on the matter. “Personally, I said in an interview that I was not in agreement with this type of tax measures in these very difficult times for the country,” he declared.

Batres had proposed the tax to reduce inequalities, noting that 24 OECD countries apply it. The National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges also rejected the idea.
