The BBC crime drama Shetland returns for its tenth season on November 5, 2025, featuring familiar detectives DI Ruth Calder and DI Tosh McIntosh investigating the murder of retired social worker Eadie Tulloch in the isolated hamlet of Lunniswick. The series introduces a personal connection to the case for one team member, alongside a stacked ensemble of returning and guest stars. Alison O'Donnell and Ashley Jensen reprise their lead roles, joined by newcomers like Samuel Anderson as Procurator Fiscal Matt Blake.

Plot Overview

In Shetland season 10, DI Ruth Calder and DI Alison 'Tosh' McIntosh tackle the murder of Eadie Tulloch, whose body is discovered after days exposed to the elements. Suspecting locals are concealing ties to the victim, the detectives uncover a web of lies in Lunniswick. A personal link to the case challenges team loyalty, while an ongoing drugs operation adds tension. Sandy Wilson juggles both investigations, and Billy McCabe faces strain due to his connection to Eadie.

Returning Cast

Ashley Jensen returns as DI Ruth Calder, now settled in Shetland after leaving London. "She’s pretty settled into the police station and her life in Shetland," Jensen said. "She’s unpacked all her boxes and settled into the community – well as much as Ruth Calder ever could."

Alison O'Donnell plays DI Tosh McIntosh, promoted and focusing on meaningful aspects of her life. "At the start of this new series, Tosh has really settled into her role as DI," O'Donnell noted. "Her relationship with Calder is also really blossoming."

Steven Robertson reprises DC Sandy Wilson, whose local knowledge proves vital. Lewis Howden returns as Sgt Billy McCabe, whose history ties into the case. "This is a really strong storyline and it proves especially difficult for Tosh and Billy," said Robertson. Anne Kidd as forensic pathologist Cora McLean, Angus Miller as Donnie, Conor McCarry as PC Alex Grant, and Eubha Akilade as PC Lorna Burns also return.

New and Guest Cast

Samuel Anderson joins as Procurator Fiscal Matt Blake, a ambitious newcomer from the city. Guest stars include Clive Russell as Arthur Mair, Ellie Haddington as Lana Mair, Niall MacGregor as Tom Jameson, Louise Brealey as Isobel Jameson, Lila Rose as Jess Jameson, Greg McHugh as Colin Waite, Frances Grey as Gina Powell, Stephen McMillan as David Powell, and Stuart Townsend as Ed Tulloch. Maria MacDonell plays the victim Eadie Tulloch.

The season airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer starting November 5, 2025. Seasons 1-9 are available on iPlayer.
