Sonia Gandhi to take final call on Kerala chief minister

Congress leaders met in Delhi to discuss Kerala's next chief minister after the UDF victory. Sonia Gandhi has been authorised to make the final decision.

Following the UDF's strong victory in the Kerala assembly elections, Congress faced a challenge selecting the chief minister. A three-hour meeting was held in Delhi on Saturday by Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, where KC Venugopal, Ramesh Chennithala and VD Satheesan presented their cases.

All Congress MLAs signed a resolution authorising the high command to decide. Deepa Das Munshi said the name would be announced soon. The party has a deadline of 23 May to form the government.

Rahul Gandhi is weighing whether to appoint KC Venugopal as chief minister or retain him in his national organisational role. Leaders expect a decision within the next 24 to 48 hours.
