Sweden opposes Tesla Full Self-Driving approval over speeding

A Swedish transport authority is urging the European Union to reject Tesla’s Full Self-Driving system unless the company disables its ability to exceed speed limits. The recommendation comes ahead of a key EU committee meeting next month.

The Swedish Transport Administration has written to the European Union’s Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles, which is scheduled to discuss the matter on June 30. Officials argue that automated systems should not systematically exceed legal speed limits, as this could undermine road safety rules.

Tesla already holds approvals for Full Self-Driving in Estonia, Lithuania, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Belgium. The company has not commented on the Swedish position.

The authority’s stance highlights differing regulatory views on automated driving features across Europe. Drivers remain responsible for supervising the system at all times.

Denmark has granted provisional approval for Tesla's Full Self-Driving Supervised system, becoming the fourth European country to do so. The Danish Road Traffic Authority, Færdselsstyrelsen, announced the decision on June 9 after reviewing the Dutch type approval.

Tesla has received approval for its advanced driver assistance software "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" in the Netherlands, the first European country. The Dutch vehicle authority RDW approved the system, which handles most driving tasks on highways and in city traffic under human supervision. Tesla is seeking approvals in other European countries.

The Netherlands has become the first European country to approve Tesla's Full Self-Driving Supervised system, following earlier regulatory discussions and a demonstration in early 2026. RDW, the Dutch vehicle regulatory authority, granted type approval after over 1.5 years of extensive testing. Tesla plans to roll out the driver assistance feature shortly.

Tesla has shared new data indicating its Full Self-Driving Supervised software recorded fewer collisions than human drivers on Dutch roads. The figures cover the period from April 10 to June 5, 2026.
