Thomas Tuchel has confirmed he remains fully committed to managing England through to Euro 2028 following their 2-1 semi-final defeat to Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The Football Association has backed the German coach despite calls for his dismissal.
England took a 1-0 lead in Atlanta through Anthony Gordon before Argentina equalised via Enzo Fernandez and won with a Lautaro Martinez header in stoppage time. Tuchel made multiple defensive substitutions after the goal, leaving England with six defenders on the pitch and just 12 per cent possession in the closing stages.
Speaking after the match, Tuchel stated: “Yes. One hundred per cent. There is still enough to improve and I am more than happy to do that.” He added that reaching the semi-finals represented an achievement for the team and outlined his intention to continue under the contract extension signed earlier in the year.
Football Association chief executive Mark Bellingham praised the effort of Tuchel and the squad, saying the players and staff “gave it everything” during the tournament. Tuchel acknowledged tactical shortcomings but insisted the outcome did not alter his plans for the national team.
