Waqf property registration deadline ends in Bengal today

The deadline for registering Waqf properties on the central government's portal concludes today in West Bengal. The TMC government, after months of resistance, directed officials last week to upload details on the UMEED portal. As of Monday night, only about 10,000 out of 80,480 properties had been registered.

In West Bengal, the deadline for registering Waqf properties on the Centre's newly launched portal ends today, December 5. The portal is part of the implementation of the Waqf (Amendment) Act, which the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government had resisted for several months. Last week, the state administration finally issued directions to district officials to upload information about Waqf properties onto the UMEED portal.

According to reports, as of Monday night, approximately 10,000 of the total 80,480 Waqf properties in the state had been successfully registered on the portal. This leaves a significant portion unregistered as the cutoff arrives.

Meanwhile, all eyes are on suspended TMC MLA Humayun Kabir, who has announced his intention to resign today, Friday. Kabir, alleging targeting and insults by the party, stated he plans to announce a new political outfit on December 22. He declared, “We will contest 135 seats in the next Assembly elections, fighting both the BJP and the TMC. If TMC has the guts, let them face me.”

Other events today include the start of the three-day North Bengal Literary Festival and Little Magazine Mela in Raiganj, organized by the Paschim Banga Bangla Academy and the District Information & Cultural Office. In Kolkata, temperatures are expected to range between 16.8°C and 28.4°C, with poor air quality advising residents to stay indoors during polluted periods.
