John Blanche, the influential illustrator whose work shaped the visual style of Warhammer, has died at the age of 77. He passed away on June 1, 2026. The news was shared by his longtime collaborator Trish Carden on behalf of his wife, Lin.
Blanche began his career in the 1970s and joined Games Workshop in 1977. He contributed artwork to early publications including the first British edition of Dungeons & Dragons and the cover for the initial Warhammer Fantasy Battle release in 1983. He rose to become art director at the company and played a central role in defining the grimdark aesthetic for Warhammer 40,000. His illustrations also appeared in Fighting Fantasy books and other roleplaying games. Blanche retired in 2023 but continued some creative work. Colleagues and fans have paid tribute to his impact as a mentor and his lasting influence on miniature painting and tabletop design.
