Xabi Alonso to make Chelsea debut in Sydney Super Cup opener

Xabi Alonso will take charge of Chelsea for the first time on Tuesday when the team faces Western Sydney Wanderers in the opening match of the 2026 Sydney Super Cup.

The fixture at Accor Stadium marks the start of Chelsea's pre-season tour in Australia. It is the first of five games, with the side due to play Tottenham next on Saturday before continuing to Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia.

Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season under three different managers. Alonso has been backed with new signings including Morgan Rogers, Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda and Emmanuel Emegha. Rogers will miss the match after extra rest following England's World Cup campaign.

Several other players have not travelled, including Malo Gusto, Pedro Neto, Trevoh Chalobah, Reece James and Enzo Fernández. Estêvão and Jamie Gittens are expected to start, while Cole Palmer and João Pedro should feature prominently.

Western Sydney Wanderers, who finished bottom of the 2025/26 A-League, will select from their full squad under manager Ufuk Talay. Kick-off is at 7.45pm local time.
