The AfD re-elected Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla as chairs at its federal party conference in Erfurt. Protests against the event proceeded mostly peacefully.
Alice Weidel received 81 percent of the votes, Tino Chrupalla 70 percent. Sven Tritschler, Stefan Möller and Katrin Ebner-Steiner were elected as deputies.
Police counted around 31,000 demonstrators, while an alliance spoke of 50,000 participants. There were isolated attacks on media representatives that triggered investigations.
Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius spoke critically in Bild am Sonntag about possible AfD state premiers and did not rule out withholding secret information.
