Amazon files FCC plan for global satellite network

Amazon has filed plans with the US Federal Communications Commission to launch thousands of satellites for a worldwide phone and data network. The proposal follows its recent merger with Globalstar and aims to provide connectivity outside traditional cell coverage starting in 2028.

Amazon submitted the filing to the FCC to deploy 5,105 satellites. The network would deliver voice, messaging, data and emergency services to users in remote areas such as forests, deserts and tundra.

The move comes after a definitive merger agreement with Globalstar reached in April. Under the deal Amazon acquires Globalstar’s satellite operations, infrastructure and mobile satellite services spectrum licenses.

The new direct-to-device system will work alongside existing low Earth orbit broadband services and Globalstar constellations. Amazon is already negotiating partnerships to integrate the technology into devices including the iPhone.
