Analysts name steelers tackle troy fautanu as key x-factor

Two NFL analysts have identified third-year offensive tackle Troy Fautanu as the biggest X-factor for the Pittsburgh Steelers heading into the 2026 season.

ESPN’s Mina Kimes and former NFL scout Brentley Weissman highlighted Fautanu’s rapid improvement after he missed most of his rookie year with knee injuries. In his second season, Fautanu started every game at right tackle, playing 1,088 snaps and allowing just 31 pressures and three sacks, according to the analysts. Weissman noted that Fautanu ranked 17th among NFL tackles in pass block win rate last year and called his ceiling sky high after being drafted out of Washington.

NFL insiders expect a surge of up to nine offensive linemen in Thursday night's first round of the 2026 NFL Draft, starting around picks 10-14. Analyst Gregg Rosenthal projects Pittsburgh Steelers selecting versatile Utah OT Spencer Fano at No. 21, while Todd McShay predicts the run—especially on tackles—will cause top wide receivers to slide.

Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Mark Kaboly has expressed strong opposition to shifting offensive tackle Troy Fautanu to guard. Kaboly said the team should keep Fautanu at right tackle where he proved effective last season.

NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah proposed that the Pittsburgh Steelers move Troy Fautanu to left tackle if they select Utah offensive tackle Spencer Fano in the first round. He called it a strong value pick during an appearance on The Mina Kimes Show. This comes amid concerns over Broderick Jones's performance at the position.

A former NFL scout believes the Pittsburgh Steelers possess one of the league's top tight end groups. Bucky Brooks highlighted Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington for their blocking and receiving skills.

The Pittsburgh Steelers addressed several needs in free agency but left gaps at left guard, left tackle and safety heading into the 2026 NFL Draft. Analysts offer varied predictions for the team's 21st overall selection, from offensive tackle to safety. Opinions differ on using a high pick on interior linemen.

The Pittsburgh Steelers added 10 rookies in the 2026 NFL Draft and six undrafted free agents, including players at tight end and inside linebacker. Despite these moves, the team could seek veteran upgrades at those positions before training camp. Roster spots remain fluid as the Steelers aim to bolster depth.

ESPN analyst Benjamin Solak urges the team to add youth to the secondary and defensive line while drafting a developmental quarterback. The Steelers hold a league-high 12 picks and are hosting the event.
