Aston Villa have signed midfielder Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for just over £50 million. The deal marks a club record for the club and came after they hijacked an agreement between the player and Newcastle United.
The 20-year-old Swiss international completed the move on 17 July. He had been expected to join Newcastle after the clubs agreed terms last week.
Manzambi scored seven goals in 47 appearances for Freiburg last season and was named Europa League Young Player of the Season. He also scored three goals for Switzerland at the World Cup.
Aston Villa paid Everton £50 million for Amadou Onana in 2024. The new fee exceeds that amount and comes after Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United earlier this summer.
