Billy Donovan joins Spurs as Mitch Johnson's lead assistant

The San Antonio Spurs have added Billy Donovan to their coaching staff. The former Chicago Bulls head coach will serve as Mitch Johnson's lead assistant.

The move comes after Donovan stepped down from the Bulls in April. He had spent five seasons with the team following six years with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Donovan, 61, enters his first assistant role in over three decades. He previously coached at Marshall and Florida, where he won two national championships, before entering the NBA in 2015.

The position was vacated by Sean Sweeney, who helped guide the Spurs to the NBA Finals last season. San Antonio lost that series to the New York Knicks in five games.

Donovan was also linked to openings with the Orlando Magic and the University of North Carolina but ultimately chose San Antonio.
