A Cessna 172 aircraft operated by Skypower Express crashed at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, while attempting to land after an emergency diversion. Four persons were onboard, but no fatalities were reported. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau has launched a probe into the incident.

On the evening of December 16, 2025, a Cessna 172 aircraft with registration number 5N-ASR, operated by Skypower Express, crashed at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State. The plane had departed from Kaduna International Airport en route to Port Harcourt International Airport but diverted to Owerri after the crew declared an emergency. The incident occurred around 8:00 pm on the approach area of Runway 17, with four passengers and crew members onboard.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed the crash through its Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji. According to the NSIB statement, airport emergency services responded promptly, and there was no post-crash fire. The runway remained active, allowing other aircraft to take off safely. No lives were lost, and efforts are underway to recover the aircraft for a detailed examination.

NSIB Director-General Capt. Alex Badeh Jr. expressed sympathy to Skypower Express management and relief over the absence of casualties. He noted that the bureau's investigation team is coordinating with authorities to secure the site and determine the cause of the accident. The NSIB has activated its protocols in line with its mandate to ensure a thorough inquiry.

This incident highlights ongoing aviation safety concerns in Nigeria, though details on the emergency declaration remain under investigation.
