David Barker, known as the major domo of the popular Sonoma Valley musical act Zig Zag, has ventured beyond music with his latest release: a children's book called “Drift Off to Dreams.” Described by Barker as “a sing along lullaby book,” it was written and illustrated entirely by him. The book includes a link to an accompanying song, which Barker composed and which is sung by local songstress Jennie Nourse.
In notes within the book, Barker explains his inspiration: “I thought I would try to write a lullaby as a positive and encouraging invitation for the child to enter the wonderful and imaginative world of dreams.” He contrasts this approach with traditional lullabies, which he notes often feature melancholy or frightening imagery, such as babies falling from treetops or boughs breaking—hardly conducive to restful sleep.
The book is now available for purchase at Readers’ Books, located just off the Plaza in Sonoma, making it an ideal local option for holiday shopping. This creative project highlights Barker's multifaceted talents, blending his musical background with storytelling to create an uplifting experience for young readers.
