Department holds briefing on mining cadastre system

South Africa’s Department of Petroleum and Mineral Resources demonstrated its new mining cadastre on 15 June in response to criticism over rollout delays.

The department’s Director-General Jacob Mbele addressed journalists at a briefing on Monday, 15 June. He stated that the system exists and rejected suggestions it had not been developed.

The cadastre is currently undergoing a test run in the Western Cape. Department officials said it is operating without issues and allows applicants to register, submit requests and track permits.

A nationwide rollout remains scheduled for 31 March 2027. The department has faced criticism for previous delays in replacing the SAMRAD system, which was widely viewed as ineffective.
