Disabled man pleads guilty to killing street boy in self-defense

Joseph Ochieng, a 59-year-old disabled man, pleaded guilty in court to killing a street boy on December 5, 2025, on Gaberone Street. He said he struck the boy with a club after being attacked. Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo remanded him until April 29.

Joseph Ochieng, also known as Kamduru, appeared before Senior Resident Magistrate Geoffrey Onsaringo. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter over an incident on the night of December 5, 2025.

Ochieng recounted sleeping in his wheelchair when he was attacked. “I was startled from sleep by a blow to the head. I saw the boy standing close by holding a club, preparing to hit me again,” he told the court. He said he grabbed the club and “with all my strength struck him on the head, and he fell on the pavement.”

The victim fell and did not get up. Ochieng said he was shocked and stayed by the body until police found him. “Patrol police passed on that street and found me guarding the body,” he added.

He sought forgiveness, stating, “That street boy attacked me without reason, but defending myself led to tragic results.” He said he had learned that “anger is loss” and requested a chance to change. The prosecutor asked the court to treat it as a first offense.

Magistrate Onsaringo remanded Ochieng to Viwandani Prison until April 29, 2026, and ordered a probation officer's report.
