Eagles lose in overtime to Chargers amid Hurts' five turnovers

The Philadelphia Eagles suffered a 22-19 overtime loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Monday night, marking their third straight defeat. Quarterback Jalen Hurts had a career-worst performance, throwing four interceptions and losing a fumble. Despite the setback, the Eagles maintain a lead in the NFC East.

The Los Angeles Chargers edged out the Philadelphia Eagles 22-19 in overtime during Week 14's Monday Night Football matchup, a game plagued by turnovers and penalties. Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled immensely, completing 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards while throwing four interceptions and losing a fumble, resulting in a quarterback rating of 31.2. This marked the fifth time in his career Hurts finished with a QBR under 40.

A bizarre sequence occurred in the second quarter when Hurts threw an interception to Da'Shawn Hand, recovered the ensuing fumble, and then lost it again while being tackled—accounting for two turnovers on the same play. This made him the first player since 1978 to give away the ball twice in such a manner, per the Elias Sports Bureau. The Chargers also committed three turnovers and drew 13 penalties in the sloppy affair.

Philadelphia's lone touchdown came on a 52-yard run by Saquon Barkley to open the fourth quarter, capping a three-play drive. The Eagles converted just 4 of 13 third downs and failed to capitalize on opportunities, particularly after reaching the opponent's side of the 50-yard line. In overtime, Hurts' deep pass to Jahan Dotson was intercepted by Tony Jefferson, sealing the Chargers' victory after their opening possession ended in a field goal.

'It starts with me and how I play,' Hurts said postgame. 'Too many turnovers. Lots of opportunities... and I wasn't able to get us in the box.' Eagles coach Nick Sirianni echoed the sentiment, noting, 'Obviously, we always feel like we got a chance but we just got to come together and find ways to win.'

With the loss, Philadelphia falls to 8-5 but still leads the NFC East ahead of the 6-6-1 Dallas Cowboys. The Chargers improve to 9-4, staying in contention in the AFC West behind Denver's 11-2 mark. This defeat highlights ongoing offensive struggles for the Eagles, who have now lost three in a row.
