Ethiopia and EU agree to strengthen economic partnership

Ethiopia and the European Union have agreed to strengthen their strategic economic partnership during talks in Washington DC. State Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide met EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Josef Sikela on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings. The discussions aim to enhance economic cooperation and support Ethiopia's growth objectives.

Addis Ababa, May 12, 2018 (FMC) – State Minister of Finance Ahmed Shide held bilateral talks with EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Josef Sikela on the sidelines of the 2026 IMF and World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington DC.

The meeting focused on deepening the strategic ties between the two sides and charting new paths for economic collaboration. Key areas included supporting Ethiopia's economic reforms, enhancing the investment climate, and stabilizing reforms in the aviation sector, alongside cooperation on sustainable growth targets.

Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to revitalizing their longstanding partnership into tangible outcomes with significant economic benefits. According to the Ministry of Finance, this agreement elevates relations between Ethiopia and the EU to a higher level.

The partnership is expected to advance Ethiopia's broader economic development goals in practice.
