Addis Ababa, 28 April 2026 — Ethiopia's Ministry of Education has announced a project to build 1,452 primary schools at a cost exceeding 6 billion birr.

Minister Berhanu Nega stated that the ministry will construct the schools in collaboration with regional authorities across all regions. He said they will be completed to quality standards and ready for the 2019 Ethiopian calendar school year in a short time.

The initiative is expected to enable 87,120 students to enroll in school, the minister noted. He emphasized that it advances the goal of providing quality education.

To this end, the ministry has signed a memorandum of understanding with regional education offices and other stakeholders.
