FC Bayern München kicked off the new year dominantly, defeating VfL Wolfsburg 8:1 (2:1) in the Allianz Arena before 75,000 spectators. It was Vincent Kompany's 50th Bundesliga match as coach, marking a perfect milestone. The Bayern, who impressed before the Christmas break, showed no loss of dominance afterward.
The game started with an own goal by Wolfsburg's Kilian Fischer in the 5th minute, pressured by Luis Díaz. Dženan Pejčinović equalized 1:1 in the 13th minute, slotting past Manuel Neuer. Díaz headed in the 2:1 in the 30th minute, assisted by Michael Olise. After halftime, Bayern's attack exploded: Olise scored the 3:1 himself (50th minute), followed by an own goal from Moritz Jenz (53rd). Harry Kane assisted Raphael Guerreiro for the 5:1 (68th) and then netted his 20th goal of the season for 6:1 (69th), a stunning curl into the top corner. Olise set up the 7:1 (76th), and Leon Goretzka volleyed in the 8:1 in the 88th minute.
Goalkeeper Manuel Neuer told DAZN: "That tastes good, I have to say. That's what we set out to do, to play our way back into the hearts at home on such a cold January day. It worked well." Wolfsburg's Fischer called the score "really embarrassing," while sporting director Pirmin Schwegler described a "complete breakdown" after halftime. Kompany had said pre-match: "New year, everything starts again, everything is back to zero. We have to pick up the points again to become German champions."
Without injured Joshua Kimmich, Kompany relied on young talents like Tom Bischof. Olise and Díaz were likened to Franck Ribéry and Arjen Robben for their technique and goal hunger. After 16 matches, Bayern have scored 63 goals. Wolfsburg remained winless in Munich, their 29th attempt failing. The lead over Dortmund is now eleven points, with the title seemingly secured.
