Following the recent poster reveal and trailer leaks, Universal Pictures has dropped the first official trailer for Christopher Nolan's epic adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus on his mythic journey home, joined by Tom Holland and Charlize Theron, with the film set for IMAX release on July 17, 2026.
The trailer, unveiled on December 22, 2025, via Universal's social media channels, teases the action-packed saga filmed worldwide with cutting-edge IMAX technology. It builds on the buzz from earlier leaks shown before Avatar: Fire and Ash screenings.
Matt Damon, as Odysseus, shared with Empire magazine: "It should be the most massively entertaining film. It should feel mythic. I saw the [Trojan] horse on the beach, and I was just like, 'F***.' It was just so cool... Chris doesn't hide the ball."
Tom Holland (Telemachus) praised the script to Agence France-Presse: "The best script I've ever read. Chris is a real collaborator." Charlize Theron (Circe) told Variety: "It’s super intimidating, and I’m the last one to show up. I’ll be like the new kid on the block."
The cast expands on previously announced names with Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Zendaya as Athena, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Mia Goth as Melantho, plus Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Benny Safdie. Principal photography spanned Sicily's Favignana island, Greece's Messinia, Morocco, the U.K., Scotland, and Ireland, prioritizing practical effects. Ludwig Göransson composes, with Hoyte van Hoytema on cinematography using advanced IMAX cameras.
Nolan told Empire of Odysseus: “The genius of the character, the cleverness, the inventiveness... He’s an amazing strategist, a very wily person.” Universal's Jim Orr dubbed it at CinemaCon “a visionary, once-in-a-generation cinematic masterpiece."
