A four-year-old girl died on Sunday after drowning in a private pool in the Almeria town of Antas, emergency services reported.
The incident occurred around 10:36 a.m. at a rural cortijo in the barriada del Real, in the Aljariz area. The girl gained access to the pool, which had a perimeter fence and locked gate, while the adults were preparing breakfast.
Those present rescued her and began resuscitation efforts. Officers from the Guardia Civil, Policía Local and the Centro de Emergencias Sanitarias 061 responded, but cardiopulmonary resuscitation was unsuccessful.
The 112 service activated psychological support for the family. Judicial police took over the proceedings after the death was certified. Antas mayor Pedro Ridao expressed regret over the "very difficult moments" and announced that the town hall will declare an official day of mourning.
