Funso Doherty declares Lagos governorship bid under ADC

Funso Doherty, a former PDP governorship aspirant, has declared his intention to contest the Lagos State governorship election in 2027 on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) platform. He made the announcement on Friday at Freedom Park Old Prison Ground in the presence of party members and supporters. Doherty cited the decaying state system and the need for leadership with integrity, capacity, vision, and a people-centered approach.

Funso Doherty, a former Lagos governorship aspirant on the Peoples Democratic Party platform, declared his intention to run for the Lagos State governorship seat on the African Democratic Congress platform at the 2027 general elections. He made the declaration on Friday, April 11, 2026, at Freedom Park Old Prison Ground with party members and supporters present.

Doherty said he decided to contest because he observed the state's nurturing system decaying and needing urgent fixing. He stressed the need for leadership with integrity, capacity, vision, and people-centeredness. "Even though Lagos, blessed as we are by the Almighty God, can have enough for all, today, it is being governed to offer a great deal for a very few and very little for most. This is what I have determined must change," he said.

He criticized the current administration, stating its achievements were pale compared to possibilities with the state's vast resources. Lagos State's 2026 budget exceeds N4 trillion, yet most citizens face deprivation in education, health, jobs, housing, water, and power. Over the past 26 years, issues like housing deficits, failing schools, youth involvement in political violence, floods, and traffic have persisted, with blame shifted elsewhere, Doherty noted.

Doherty urged party members to unite in addressing inconsistencies in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He called for investments in quality education, free healthcare for children, affordable mass transit, and an honest government. "Every naira stolen from this state is a naira stolen from a child’s classroom, from a patient’s hospital bed, from a family’s future," he said. The campaign represents the hopes and dreams of Lagos residents, he added.
