Google buys full output from Arkansas solar project

Google has agreed to purchase all power from a large solar and battery facility in Arkansas to help offset emissions from its data centers.

The deal covers the entire initial output from the Steel River Energy Center once it begins operations in 2029. That phase will deliver 1.6 gigawatts of solar power and 2 gigawatts of battery storage, enough to supply 315,000 homes.

Google will pay a fixed price for the electricity but will continue drawing power from the regional grid. The full project is planned to reach 2.45 gigawatts of solar capacity and 2.9 gigawatt-hours of storage.

The first two phases of the project received $3.5 billion in financing and will use steel and solar panels made in the United States. Google's electricity consumption increased 37 percent last year, raising its grid emissions by the same amount.
