Hisbah cancels Kano TikTokers' planned wedding

The Kano State Hisbah Board has halted the proposed wedding between social media creators Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira ‘Yar Guda, deeming it a pretentious arrangement to avoid legal repercussions. The board's decision follows an investigation into their relationship, originally referred by a court. The case may now return to court if reconciliation fails.

In Kano, Nigeria, the State Hisbah Board announced the cancellation of a planned wedding between TikTok content creator Idris Mai Wushirya and his partner Basira ‘Yar Guda, a dwarf comedian. The board described the relationship as staged to evade consequences from prior charges of immoral conduct.

Deputy Commander Dr. Mujahedeen Aminuddeen explained that an investigation uncovered the lack of mutual understanding. 'After our investigation, we discovered that the proposed marriage was not based on mutual understanding but rather an attempt to evade legal consequences. The board, therefore, resolved to cancel the wedding to prevent future conflict,' he stated. Although the couple submitted blood samples to verify medical compatibility, the process was stopped to avoid complications.

The matter originated from a controversial video on Wushirya’s social media, leading to charges by the Kano State Censorship Board. Magistrate Halima Wali of a Kano Magistrate Court initially suspended her ruling after the defendants confessed to being in love and intending to marry. She referred them to the Hisbah Board with a 60-day deadline to formalize the union under Islamic traditions, or return the case to court.

The court's action sparked public backlash, with some claiming it ordered a forced marriage. Kano State Judiciary spokesperson Baba Jibo refuted this, emphasizing that the ruling was suspended for fairness based on the couple's statements. 'Both TikTokers told the court they love each other. In fact, the lady, Bashira Yar Guda, stated on the record that she would marry Idris only if he provided his own accommodation, not a rented house,' Jibo clarified. He urged the public to verify the proceedings to counter misinformation.

If no reconciliation occurs, the case will reopen in court.
