Hulu develops 'The Witches of Cambridge' series with Noah Hawley

Hulu is developing a drama series titled The Witches of Cambridge, based on an upcoming novel by Alice Hoffman. The project is being produced by Noah Hawley's 26 Keys Productions. It follows two young women in 1950s Cambridge, Massachusetts, who join a secret witches' group at Radcliffe.

Hulu has greenlit the development of The Witches of Cambridge, a new drama series adapted from Alice Hoffman's forthcoming novel. The book, the first in a planned series, is set for publication by Scribner on August 11, 2026. Noah Hawley's production company, 26 Keys, is handling the adaptation.

The story centers on two brilliant young women in 1950s Cambridge, Massachusetts, who become involved with the Lilith Society, a mysterious secret group of witches at Radcliffe. This premise echoes Hoffman's 1995 novel Practical Magic, which features two witches and inspired a movie adaptation starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The sequel, Practical Magic 2, based on Hoffman's 2021 novel The Book of Magic, is scheduled for release on September 11, 2026, with Bullock and Kidman returning. A staged musical version of Practical Magic is also in development.

Hawley, known for his work on FX series, brings extensive experience to the project. He serves as creator, writer, and showrunner for Alien: Earth, which has been renewed for a second season with production starting in 2026. He also executive produces, writes, showruns, and directs the anthology series Fargo, which has garnered 70 Primetime Emmy nominations and seven wins across five seasons. Additionally, FX has ordered a series adaptation of Ubisoft's Far Cry video game franchise, created by Hawley and starring Rob Mac. Both Alien: Earth and Fargo are produced under Hawley's 26 Keys banner, which previously handled the FX series Legion.

Hawley maintains an overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television. He is represented by WME, Untitled Entertainment, and McKuin Frankel Whitehead, while Hoffman is repped by CAA.
