An explosion in an induction hob in a protected housing block on Sant Vicent street in Ibiza has injured four people, two critically, and led to the evacuation of about 70 residents. The incident happened around 17:15 on Tuesday amid works replacing gas appliances with electric ones. Emergency services responded quickly to the scene.
The explosion occurred in flat number 12 of the block on Sant Vicent street in Ibiza's Can Cantó neighborhood. The Ibiza Health Area reported that two women, aged 45 and 21, were admitted to the ICU after 18:20 in critical condition. A 23-year-old man is stable under observation in the emergency department, and a fourth lightly injured person was taken to Policlínica Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
Three of the injured—the 45-year-old mother, her 23-year-old son, and 21-year-old daughter-in-law—were in the affected flat. The fourth was a neighbor from the adjacent property. Family members told EFE the building was undergoing works, including replacing gas appliances with electric ones, and the hob exploded when switched on, likely due to an installation fault.
The incident forced the evacuation of about 70 people from the block's 23 flats. Responders included three SAMU 061 ambulances, three fire trucks, Ibiza Local Police officers, Mayor Rafa Triguero, and municipal technicians.
At 19:20, Ibiza Firefighters began clearing debris from the building and neighboring ones, according to fire chief José Antonio López. The Scientific Police, Redexis gas technicians, and firefighters inspected the flats; residents of the six most affected units must find alternative accommodation overnight.
