Kenya Met forecasts rains in five regions this weekend

The Kenya Meteorological Department has urged Kenyans to brace for continued rains in several parts of the country from Friday, April 17 to Tuesday, April 22. Heavy rainfall is expected in the Rift Valley, Western and Lake Victoria basin regions, while other areas will see lighter showers. Residents have been warned to watch for potential flooding.

The Kenya Meteorological Department issued a weekend weather advisory, forecasting continued rains in parts of Central Kenya, Rift Valley, Lake Victoria basin, Southeastern Lowlands and the Coast. Heavy rainfall is expected to start in the afternoon and extend into the night in the Rift Valley, Western and Lake Victoria basin.

Affected counties include Siaya, Kisumu, Homabay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia and West Pokot. "Morning rains are likely to occur over a few places. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected over a few places occasionally spreading to several places. Night showers expected over a few places," Kenya Met stated.

Central Kenya counties such as Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang'a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi and Nairobi are set for light rains in the morning and afternoon. A similar pattern is predicted for coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Kwale, and southeastern lowlands including Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado and Taita Taveta.

The department also warned of very cold nights in Central Kenya, with temperatures dropping to about 10°C. Daytime temperatures are expected to remain high, up to 31°C, in the Western, Lake Victoria basin and Coast regions.
