West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has suspended all under-construction commercial projects in Kolkata until July 31 following the collapse of a warehouse in Taratala that killed at least five workers.
The under-construction warehouse in Kolkata’s Taratala area collapsed on the afternoon of June 24, 2026. At least five labourers died and rescue teams continued efforts to free workers trapped under the debris. The chief minister visited the site and later addressed a press conference at Nabanna.
Adhikari stated that the building plan sanctioned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation on January 17, 2026, was faulty. He ordered a citywide audit and on-site inspections of all under-construction commercial projects. The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority had granted a 30-year lease for the land to M/s Behera Brothers in August 2024.
The chief minister also praised the quick response of Kolkata Police, the Army, and other agencies. Army teams joined the rescue operation by 3.15 pm after a request around 2.30 pm. Twenty ambulances were deployed to transport the injured.
