Linda Perry has released a new version of her song 'Beautiful' as the first single from her upcoming solo album 'Let It Die Here,' set for release on May 8 via Kill Rock Stars and 670 Records. The track marks her first solo album in over 25 years, inspired by the filming of her personal documentary of the same name. A short film accompanying the single, directed by Sara Gilbert, features their child Rhodes Perry and emphasizes themes of self-expression and individuality.
Linda Perry, known for her influential work in music, has revisited her iconic anthem 'Beautiful' in a stripped-back, intimate performance that reframes the song through her personal experiences. The release serves as the lead single for 'Let It Die Here,' her first solo album in more than 25 years, scheduled for May 8 on Kill Rock Stars and 670 Records. The album comprises 17 tracks, including 'Balboa Park,' 'Anxiety,' 'Liberation,' and the reimagined 'Beautiful.'
The songs emerged during the production of Perry's documentary 'Linda Perry: Let It Die Here,' directed by Don Hardy and produced by KTF Films. Following its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, the film will have a global theatrical rollout starting in May, distributed by Evan Saxon Productions, with streaming to follow.
Accompanying the single is a short film/music video directed by Sara Gilbert, inspired by a 1940s-era talent show. It stars Perry and Gilbert's child, Rhodes Perry, alongside actor Lukas Haas and Shane Powers, with costumes by Gara Gambucci and contributions from a crew including members of The Conners team. The video blends vintage aesthetics with a message of courage and acceptance of difference.
Perry commented on the song's meaning: 'When I wrote “Beautiful,” I had no idea I was struggling inside. “I am beautiful no matter what they say.” “They” represents the insecurities we all face, the fear that makes people unkind simply because someone or something is different. “Beautiful” is about self-expression, being free to be whoever you want to be.'
Gilbert added: 'When Linda asked me to direct the music video for “Beautiful,” I was honoured but tentative at first. Rather than a traditional music video, I approached “Beautiful” as a short film about finding confidence and strength in the face of intolerance.'
Perry is scheduled to perform 'Beautiful' on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on February 24.
