Macron imposes acceleration of end-of-life bill vote against Prime Minister advice

During a secret meeting at the Élysée on May 6 2026, Emmanuel Macron decided the final vote on the bill legalizing euthanasia and assisted suicide would take place before summer, against the advice of Sébastien Lecornu.

The president ruled in the presence of Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin, Health Minister Stéphanie Rist and Minister for Relations with Parliament Laurent Panifous.

The end-of-life bill has been under parliamentary discussion for more than a year. Left-wing deputies strengthened the text, particularly on penal aspects by creating an obstruction offence.

The reform provides for the legalization of euthanasia and assisted suicide. The final vote is scheduled before summer according to the presidential decision.
