Johannesburg officials plan to shut Main Street in Marshalltown to vehicles on April 12 for Main Street Sundays, creating a space for walking, cycling, skating, and socializing. The event aims to let people experience the city without traffic noise, turning the street into a communal area.
Visitors can access the free (mahala) event from 10am to 5pm by registering online and heading to Main Street. Parking is available at Anglo’s 42 Parkade in Anderson Street, with options to walk, cycle, or use rideshares.
Activities span multiple zones: a zen area outside 44 Main with wellness sessions amid trees and fountains; an info zone for Jozi My Jozi details; an active mobility spot for bikes and skateboards; a kids’ zone with interactive museum games, street games, and graffiti; and stalls from 30 makers. Live music features hip-hop artist Osmic Menoe, alongside a food court at Ghandi Square and open restaurants.
Radio hosts from Talk Radio 702 and VOW88.1 FM will conduct outside broadcasts, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
