Man arrested in Sol metro for assaulting elderly woman

A 40-year-old man of Maghrebi origin was arrested at Madrid's Sol metro station after pushing an 80-year-old woman against an incoming train and repeatedly assaulting her. The victim sustained serious injuries and was taken to a hospital. The incident halted service for 45 minutes.

The incident took place around 12:00 noon on the platform of Line 1 at Madrid's Sol metro station, heading toward Pinar de Chamartín. Witnesses reported that the attacker pushed the elderly woman against an incoming train carriage and then beat her on the ground, kicking her in the head and jumping on her while uttering incoherent words. This caused panic among passengers, who screamed and ran, leaving a pool of blood on the platform.

The 80-year-old woman suffered a traumatic brain injury and multiple contusions, so Samur attended to her on site and transported her in serious condition to the Clinical Hospital. An off-duty National Police officer, a station security guard, and several passengers intervened to subdue the man until police reinforcements arrived.

National Police arrested him and took him to the Mobile Brigade facilities, charging him with attempted homicide due to the severity of the injuries. Police sources state that the detainee has numerous prior criminal records and mental health issues, though he had no prior connection to the victim. Line 1 service was suspended at Sol until 12:45 at police request.

Metro de Madrid has stated it will act as a private prosecutor in the judicial process, pursuing both civil and criminal actions against the aggressor to demand full accountability.
