Milo Ventimiglia has been cast as the lead in American Blue, a new cop drama pilot for HBO Max. The project, written by Jeremy Carver, follows a man returning to his Illinois hometown to aid a struggling police force. David Ayer, known for directing films like Suicide Squad, will helm the pilot.
Milo Ventimiglia, best known for his role as Jack Pearson on NBC's This Is Us from 2016 to 2022, will star in American Blue, an HBO Max pilot developed under the streamer's model inspired by The Pitt. The one-hour drama centers on Brian “Milk” Milkovich, a quietly determined natural-born leader who returns to his hometown of Joliet, Illinois, to rescue a beleaguered police force while seeking personal redemption. Ventimiglia, who earned three Emmy nominations for This Is Us, also appeared in Heroes and Gilmore Girls, and is set for Netflix's upcoming Harlan Coben adaptation I Will Find You.
Written by Jeremy Carver, former showrunner of Supernatural, the pilot is executive produced by Carver, Brian Udovich, Neil Reynolds, and director David Ayer. Ventimiglia serves as co-executive producer, with his partner Russ Cundiff as producer. Warner Bros. Television, where Carver has an overall deal, is the studio behind the project. Ayer, repped by WME, previously directed the pilot and second episode of Fox's 2020 series Deputy, in addition to films such as Suicide Squad (2016) and Fury (2014).
The announcement, first reported by Deadline on January 30, 2026, highlights HBO Max's strategy for longer seasons of 15 or more episodes, modest budgets, and annual releases, similar to The Pitt, which was created by R. Scott Gemmill and executive produced by John Wells, starring Noah Wyle.
Sarah Aubrey, head of Max Original Programming, stated: “American Blue will take audiences inside a gritty and authentic police drama, reflecting the myriad challenges in policing today. As with The Pitt, our goal of longer seasons will allow viewers to sink deeply into this world across multiple episodes and to return to it on an annual basis. We can’t wait for Jeremy Carver’s vision for American Blue to come to life with Milo Ventimiglia in the lead role and David Ayer directing our pilot.”
Clancy Collins White, president of creative affairs at Warner Bros. Television, added: “We are thrilled to have Milo and David join American Blue. Milo’s dynamic presence on-screen and David’s keen eye are a perfect match for the complex, character-driven drama that Jeremy created. We look forward to seeing this trio bring Milk’s journey to life.”
