May brings a selection of new books designed to check off specific tasks in the 2026 Read Harder Challenge. Among them is Canon by Paige Lewis, set for release on May 19, which features a nonbinary protagonist named Yara who receives a divine message to confront one of Earth's villains. Liberty Hardy describes it as a riotously original novel that bends minds with themes of life, death, and fate for Task #4: Read a novel with a main character who uses they/them pronouns. Another early release, She Waits Where Shadows Gather by Michelle Tang on May 5, fits Task #6 with its gothic horror set in Manila. The story follows Carlos Tam, a reality TV host debunking paranormal claims, who encounters real mysteries in his ancestral home after a car accident leaves him hearing voices from the house, as noted by Emily Martin. Also out on May 5 is Platform Decay from Martha Wells's The Murderbot Diaries series for Task #20, where the sentient security bot reluctantly joins a mission involving humans and children. Liberty Hardy highlights the recent Apple TV adaptation of the series. Additional titles include Bromantasy by Máire Roche on May 26 for Task #9, a queer romantasy about best friends Juniper and Mo on a monster-slaying quest; Queer and How We Got Here: A (Personal) History by Hazel Newlevant on May 12, a nonfiction comic blending memoir and queer history for Task #13; and Hunger: A Novel by Choi Jin-young, translated by Soje, also on May 12 for Task #21, exploring grief and transformation in Korean horror. These books provide diverse excuses to visit bookstores this month.
