OpenAI adds customization for ChatGPT's warmth and enthusiasm

OpenAI has introduced new options allowing users to adjust the warmth, enthusiasm, and use of emojis in ChatGPT responses. These features appear in the Personalization settings following user complaints about the AI's tone in recent updates. The changes come amid efforts to make the chatbot more conversational after a contentious rollout earlier this year.

OpenAI's latest update to ChatGPT enables users to fine-tune the AI's personality traits directly. With the release of GPT-5.2, the company has added sliders for warmth, enthusiasm, headers and lists, and emojis under the Personalization tab. Users can select more, less, or default settings to tailor responses to their preferences.

This customization arrives about a month after OpenAI introduced Professional, Candid, and Quirky options in GPT-5.1, located in the Base style and tone section of the same settings. The move addresses feedback from users who found the AI's tone less engaging.

The updates stem from challenges earlier in 2025, when OpenAI rolled out GPT-5 to replace GPT-4o. Many users criticized the new model for sounding rude or sassy, prompting complaints about its reduced conversational warmth. In response, OpenAI allowed model selection and committed to warmer interactions.

OpenAI announced the new features on X on December 19, 2025, stating: "You can now adjust specific characteristics in ChatGPT, like warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji use. Now available in your 'Personalization' settings." This professional makeover aims to balance functionality with user-friendly tones, ensuring broader appeal for the AI chatbot.
