PICMG joins Linux Foundation as associate member

The PICMG consortium, known for open modular computing standards, has become an associate member of the Linux Foundation. This step aims to enhance collaboration in open-source ecosystems for embedded and edge computing. The move supports PICMG's efforts in developing interoperable hardware and software solutions.

PICMG, the organization behind various open modular computing standards, announced on March 5, 2026, that it has joined the Linux Foundation as an associate member. The decision seeks to strengthen ties with open-source communities that drive technologies in embedded, industrial, and edge computing sectors.

This alignment complements PICMG's existing projects, including the Hardware Platform Management (HPM) specification family and the IoT Foundry interoperability framework. These initiatives focus on creating flexible and interoperable systems for diverse applications.

"As open-source software becomes increasingly important to connected embedded and edge computing technology, it’s important for PICMG to align more closely with the leading open-source ecosystem," stated Jessica Isquith, President of PICMG. "By joining the Linux Foundation, we’re better supporting our members as they build interoperable, future-proof solutions for the next level of innovation."

For years, PICMG has engaged in open-source efforts, such as integrating the DMTF Redfish specification into its IoT.x interoperability framework. The IoT.x family, backed by the IoT Foundry open-source project, offers a standardized API to facilitate multi-vendor device integration, edge management, and network interoperability.

Additionally, Redfish is under consideration for streamlining the management of data-center and network systems using PICMG standards like AdvancedTCA, AdvancedMC, MicroTCA, and COM-HPC.

The membership is expected to improve interactions with Linux Foundation projects and increase visibility among developers, manufacturers, and contributors. "Although PICMG has traditionally focused on hardware solutions for the marketplace, software availability is a key component to deployment of PICMG-based systems," remarked Doug Sandy, PICMG’s Chief Technology Officer. "We look forward to tighter collaboration with the software development community through the Linux Foundation and other open-source software initiatives."

PICMG views this partnership as a way to foster integrated hardware-software environments in industries relying on durable, interoperable computing platforms. It also aids the adoption of PICMG specifications amid the shift toward software-defined architectures.

Through this, PICMG integrates into a worldwide network of entities advancing open-source in areas like cloud computing, networking, security, and edge infrastructure.
