Police officers repelled an ambush by suspected bandits in Turkana County and recovered 45 stolen cattle during a multi-agency operation on 19 July 2026.
The National Police Service launched the operation after receiving intelligence that livestock stolen from Pokot North Sub-County had been moved to Namakat Village in Aroo Sub-County. Officers traced the animals and were escorting them to safety when bandits attacked in an attempt to reclaim them.
A fierce exchange of gunfire followed. Security forces repelled the attackers and retained control of the cattle. The recovered livestock are now in secure custody while authorities work to identify and return them to their owners.
Investigations are ongoing and patrols have been increased in the area. The police have asked the public to provide any information that could help recover more animals or identify those involved in the theft.
